What is A Conscious Consumer?
“Conscious consumption is an umbrella term that simply means engaging in the economy with more awareness of how your consumption impacts society at large. Shopping sustainably, with the intent to preserve the environment, is one way to consume more consciously.” – The New York Times
Conscious consumption is a rising trend among people who want to promote eco-conscious ideas and mindful spending. Being a conscious consumer means we can begin to cut back on wasteful consumption + spending and focus on buying and using only the things we need on a regular basis. They also think carefully about their purchases and the sustainability of each item before they press “place order”. They evaluate things like the likelihood of them using the product, product quality, and ingredients, and how they can carefully dispose of the item once it’s no longer needed or useable.
Here are some ways to support conscious consumption:
Think about the packaging of the types of items you buy. Whenever possible, purchase products that have very little packaging or environmentally friendly packaging.
Whenever you can, try to buy quality items that will last a long time versus a cheaper item that may last you a shorter amount of time.
Do your homework, start thinking about the brands you buy from and the products you purchase. Visit the companies website and do some digging. A great place to start is on their “About Us” or “FAQ” pages.
Read your ingredients! I’m not saying you need to Google every ingredient you see on the packaging but be aware of the top ingredients and materials being used.
Before buying anything, try to make it a habit to ask yourself the very important question of “do I really need this right now?” Aside from being more environmentally friendly, this also leaves you with a little extra spending cash! Win, win!
Every time you buy a product, you have the power to choose to promote ethical products and make a positive impact.
To make your life just a little bit easier, I have rounded up a few of my favorite products that really support conscious consumption. What kind of Keeping Up With Coco roundup would it be if I didn’t include a little bit of everything. I have included everything from beauty products to yummy snacks and even some of my favorite supplements!
